IQSL-Grating Cavity Strong Optical Confinement between Non-periodic Flat Dielectric Gratings

چکیده
We present a novel design of optical micro-cavity where the optical energy resides primarily in free space, therefore is readily accessible to foreign objects such as atoms, molecules, mechanical resonators, etc. We describe the physics of these resonators, and propose a design method based on stochastic optimization. Cavity designs with diffraction-limited mode volumes and quality factors in the range of 10–10 are presented. With a purely planar geometry, the cavity can be easily integrated on-chip using conventional microand nanofabrication processes.

Waveguide mode in the box with an extraordinary flat dispersion curve.
The extraordinary flattening of the dispersion curve of the so-called cavity resonator integrated guided-mode resonance filters (CRIGFs) is analyzed and explained as due to the intramode coupling imposed by the external Bragg resonators. CRIGFs are composed of a grating coupler (guided-mode resonance filter, GMRF) put between two distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs). They form a cavity box in wh...
متن کاملArtificial high birefringence in all-dielectric gradient grating for broadband terahertz waves
Subwavelength dielectric gratings are widely applied in the phase and polarization manipulation of light. However, the dispersion of the normal dielectric gratings is not flat while their birefringences are not enough in the THz regime. In this paper, we have fabricated two all-dielectric gratings with gradient grids in the THz regime, of which artificial birefringence is much larger than that ...
متن کاملOptical properties of thin graphitic nanopetal arrays
Thermal radiative properties of thin graphitic petal arrays are theoretically and experimentally investigated. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations are first performed to calculate optical properties of vertical graphitic arrays of different structures, namely, graphitic gratings, periodic graphitic cavities, and random graphitic cavities. For graphitic gratings, the absorptance and...
متن کاملComputational Optics Non-periodic grating couplers in dielectric waveguides
Grating couplers are fundamental building components for the design of optical circuits. The proper treatment of a device that couples the guided modes of a waveguide with the radiation in free space is particularly difficult because of the continuum nature of the radiating modes. The desire of high-density integration poses additional problems due to the fact that the simplest used coupling st...
متن کاملComparison of plasmon surface waves on shallow and deep metallic 1D and 2D gratings.
The propagation of a plasmon surface wave in deep metallic lamellar gratings is shown to be characterized by absorption losses smaller than on a flat metallic-dielectric interface. This feature is due to the formation of a resonance of the electric field inside the groove. Similar to the plasmon surface wave in shallow gratings, this kind of plasmon can lead to total absorption of incident ligh...
